David Cheruiyot Wins His 4th Ottawa Marathon
May 200939-year-old Spira Athlete David Cheruiyot Wins the Ottawa Marathon in a Sprint Finish!
David Cheruiyot captured the 2009 Ottawa Marathon in a come-from-behind dramatic sprint finish. This is his third year in a row winning in Spira Stingers and the fourth time in the past five years that David has captured the top prize in Canada's most prestigious marathon.
More remarkably, David is almost 40 years old and out-sprinted his principal challenger, 20-year-old Wegaheyu Girma of Ethiopia. Please follow the youtube link to see the footage of the race and David's amazing finish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj5hX7gImX8
David has lost but one marathon in the three years since he's begun competing in Spira. He has won the Houston Marathon 3 times, the Istanbul Marathon, The Mercedes Marathon, and the Detroit Free Press Marathon in addition to his dominance in Ottawa.
David credits much of his success to the Spira shoe, which he claims allows him to train longer and harder with less risk of injury and reduced recovery time following each race. In one four-month stretch, for example, he won 3 major marathons! As he told the newspaper in Ottawa, he expects to be competing at an elite level well into his 40's!
